The Zoo

A morning at the zoo, mostly through wire and bars. A white lion mid-yawn, meerkats on watch, a sheep that came to the fence.

Wider, and the scene settles: the grey rock wall, a low ledge, the grid of wire, and in the middle the orangutan with both arms raised, as though signalling to someone far away. One foot hooks the lower mesh. The pose is held a long time, long enough for the visitors to drift on and new ones to arrive.

Looking down, the floor is crowded: black and white, ginger and cream, one long-haired white guinea pig fluffed out like a dandelion. They scatter and regroup in small bursts, noses busy. Sunlight falls flat across the sand. Every one of them seems to be heading somewhere important, and none of them agree on where.

A giraffe's head swings into the frame beneath a branch heavy with red-orange blossoms. Its eye is dark and soft, its horns tipped with tufts. The sky is a hazy pale blue, the treeline far below. The flowers hang just above its ears like a decoration it did not ask for and does not seem to mind.

Three meerkats, three faces turned upward. One stands tall on its hind legs by the rock, paws hanging loose, while the other two sit lower and stare straight up at whoever is leaning over the wall. Dark eye patches give them all a look of surprised attention. A fourth tail flicks past on top of the boulder.

One sheep has worked its way to the rail and rests its chin there, long ears hanging down, the inside of one glowing pink in the light. Its eye is dark and calm. The rest of the flock dissolves into a soft blur behind. It gazes out with the patient face of someone queuing for something they are sure is worth it.

Then it turns, and the bird comes into full view: a crown of stiff golden plumes, a black cap, a red and white patch on the cheek, a pale eye fixed sideways. The grey neck curves down out of the frame. The wire diamonds frame the face like a lattice window. It looks dressed for an occasion nobody told the rest of the zoo about.

Up close, the pony has a thick pale fringe that falls over its eyes, and a pink halter buckled under its chin. It leans against the rail, head low, coat glossy brown. Someone in a white shirt stands blurred in the background. The pony looks drowsy and content, like it has decided the afternoon can carry on without it.

The tortoise pushes its head forward until it fills the middle of the frame, scaly skin pebbled and dry, small dark eyes set deep. The shell looms behind it, blurred into a pattern of ochre plates. It looks ancient and faintly annoyed, like someone woken from a very long nap to answer the door.
