Pull back and the set appears. A gravel road curves through dry grass, big shade trees hold the whole sky in their branches, and a scaffold of metal pipes stands beside a white box with a ladder. Two tiny figures sit on the grass in the far shade. The light is long and gold. Somewhere among these props, the next shot is being chosen.
Shirt still on, but the shorts have changed to blue with a yellow stripe, and he is walking away down a cracked lane under big trees. Tall grass leans in from the left. A faded sign hangs on a shed up ahead. The shoot is over, or on a break, and the road has become the subject, with him just passing through it.
Turn away from the road and there is only overgrowth: weeds taller than a person, a tangle of shrubs, a corrugated roof sinking into the green. Power lines draw thin diagonals across the trees. Haze softens the hills behind. The light comes in low and golden, making every seed head glow, and the air seems thick enough to hear.
Late afternoon and the road is empty. A yellow line swings around a gentle bend, shadows from the trees lying across the asphalt in long bands. Houses with pitched roofs sit back among the gardens, and power poles carry their wires off toward the sky. No traffic, no voices, only the feeling of having walked a little further than planned.
Over the tall grass, a two-storey house with a brown tiled roof peers from behind the trees, its windows dark. A long low wall runs along the field. The forested hill rises soft and rounded behind everything, and the sky above it has gone pale. It is a quiet view, the kind that plays behind the credits while nobody is watching.
The dog is back, standing on a patched and cracked stretch of lane, looking further up the road toward something small and orange in the distance. Grass grows along both edges, a pale wall runs down the right, and trees close in at the far end. It waits, tail up, as if deciding whether the next part of the walk is worth it.
A white building with tall rectangular openings stands on the far side of the road, unfinished or abandoned, its windows showing sky straight through. A red and white sign leans by the fence. At the bottom edge something white is crossing, a bird, its neck stretched forward. The sky is clear, and the building looks like a set nobody came back to finish.
