On a tiled floor patterned with blue squares, a white dog curls into a knot, head tucked down to its back, busy with some itch only it can locate. The afternoon light is flat and bright. Nothing else in the frame matters. The dog has made itself the whole event of the day.

Now the dog turns to face the visitor, head lowered slightly, ears pointing in two directions. The eyes are calm but not entirely convinced. Fur stands up along its back in soft tufts. Behind, the stone wall and a pale garden blur together. It hasn't barked. It is simply checking, the way a guard does, whether this stranger plans to stay or just pass through.
