The wake spreads out like a wide road behind the boat, white churn fading into green. Far back on the hazy shore, the tall tower stands alone above the treeline, a single vertical mark in all that horizontal. The sky is cream and grey, low clouds hanging. Everything behind is getting smaller at the same rate, as if being slowly zoomed out.

The motor's black cowl sits low at the bottom of the frame, churning the water into a long white plume. Far out behind, a single small boat follows, or just happens to be heading the same way. The skyline on the horizon is faint now, a few pale towers in the haze. The sea between is restless and dark green.

Straight down, the water is so clear it hardly seems there. Light ripples across the surface in fine wavy lines, and below, darker shapes spread over the bottom: rock or coral, it is hard to say. The colour shifts from pale green to a deeper jade. It is like peering into an aquarium that someone forgot to put fish in.

Dozens more arrive in the next twelve seconds, packed close and pointing every way, yellow and black stripes catching the light. Some swim up to the surface; others hang deeper, blurred. The water is a bright, clear green. It looks like a channel of pure static, every dot alive and moving, the picture never quite settling.

Dark and flat on the horizon, the low island returns, a long smudge of green. The sea in front has gone grey-green, darker than before, and the clouds are thicker overhead. The light has flattened. It is four minutes past ten, and the colours seem to have been turned down a notch, as if someone reached for the dial.
