Tour boats with gold figurines and red flags moored at a pier on a calm lake, wooded hills behind
Playground structure painted with rainbow stripes and a house shape, behind a metal fence
Behind a fence, a small structure is painted like a house in a children's book: a red triangle roof, blue walls, rainbow stripes running down the side of a stairway. Apartment blocks rise behind it. The paint is bright but slightly faded. It feels like a set piece from a programme that went off the air years ago.
Mesh wall covered in hundreds of small colourful paper notes and cards
Hundreds of small paper notes cover the mesh, layered so thickly that the wall behind is almost lost. White, red, blue, yellow, green, each one carrying a few handwritten words. Some are fresh, some curled and faded. It is like looking at a wall of messages from a radio call-in show, all broadcasting at the same moment.
Close view of rippling teal water with bright reflections across its surface
Looking straight down from the edge, the lake becomes pure texture: teal folds and silver creases, light caught and dropped and caught again. No horizon, no boats, nothing to measure it by. It could be a metre deep or a hundred. It looks like the screen between channels, if static were blue and wet.
Green cast-metal dragon coiled on a golden urn beside temple steps, a visitor in white at a doorway
A green metal dragon winds up the side of a golden urn, claws gripping, scales sharp, mouth open on something unsaid. Red characters glow on the gold below it. Beyond, a visitor in a white cap and skirt stands at the top of the temple steps, peering in through the doorway. The dragon faces the other way, keeping watch over the courtyard.
Deeply carved grey stone panel of dragons or qilin twisting among clouds and waves, flecked with red
In this square the stone is cut so deep it becomes lace: two beasts coil through clouds and waves, horns and claws and curling tails, flecked with faint red and gold. A painted orb hangs between them. Daylight falls flat across the relief and still finds a hundred tiny shadows. Looking for too long, everything starts to move.
Large stone relief of dragons coiling around a golden orb set in a courtyard, white balustrades around it
Set into the courtyard and ringed with white balustrade, a great slab of carved stone writhes with dragons, scales and whiskers and claws, all circling a small golden orb at the centre. Coins and offerings glint in the hollows. Behind the railing, the red and gold of the hall's eaves runs in a long strip. Rain has darkened the stone to a green-grey.
Symmetrical view of a white hall with a dark two-tiered roof and bronze finial atop a central staircase
Dead centre now, from the bottom of the stairs: the hall is perfectly symmetrical, two-tiered roof balanced above white walls, balustrades fanning out on either side, the staircase disappearing into its middle. The sky is a single grey tone. It looks like a station logo, held still on the screen before the programming starts.
Looking up into an ornate octagonal ceiling with lit coffers, carved rings and a dark blue centre
Inside, look straight up. The ceiling folds inward in octagons, each ring more carved than the last, until it opens on a disc of deep blue edged with gold points like a sun drawn by a child. Lamps hidden in the coffers throw warm light along the beams. It is the kind of pattern that seems to rotate if you stare at it too long.
Night view over an aircraft wing toward another airliner on a lit apron, lettering 'STAR' on its fuselage
Evening on the apron, just after six. Through the window the wing stretches out pale and flat, a small yellow mark on its surface catching the floodlights. Across the tarmac another jet waits with letters starting STAR on its side, lights blazing behind its tail. Somewhere a ground crew member waves a wand. The engines rise in pitch, and the island begins to step backward into the dark.
