Movie on the Hill

An open-air concert on a hillside. It starts in late sun on the grass and ends in stage light, confetti and smoke.

The sun breaks through clouds above a hill, with a silhouetted stage tower and crowd below.

Eight minutes to five, and the hill is filling up. Camping chairs dot the grass in loose rows, each one facing the big screen at the bottom of the slope. A green glass bottle stands in the grass in front. Someone holds up a phone. The sun hangs low and hazy over the hills. Everything is waiting for the show to start.

Then the screen fills with white specks, scattered and falling, as if it is snowing on the other side of the glass. The whole stage goes blue. Five musicians stand in a line, the singer in white at centre, a guitarist at each end. For a hot November night on a grassy hill, it is a strange and lovely thing to watch snow.
