Behind the Wire

A long day out. The drive, then the zoo: tortoises under a heat lamp, a marmoset in a shaft of light, a lion cub in the shade, a crow and its shadow.

Group of tortoises clustered on red soil in warm red light in the corner of a concrete enclosure
Porch railing lined with small potted cacti, a stone pillar, a tree stump and bottles in shade
Along the porch railing, a row of small potted cacti takes the sun like a waiting audience. A tall one leans on a tree-stump stand among watering bottles and a yellow tub. The stone pillar holds the shade on the left. Through the turned balusters, the garden flickers green. It looks like a collection someone tends every morning, one pot at a time.
Driver's hand on the steering wheel, multi-lane road with cars and roadside trees through the windscreenClose view of a deer with antlers behind a chain-link fence, mouth open, spotted deer lying behindSmall monkey with a white crest of fur perched on a branch in a shaft of light inside a dark enclosureCoiled yellow-and-black patterned snake resting on chunks of coconut husk in a glass terrariumYoung pale lion lying on dirt, head turned to the side, sun and leaf shadows on the groundBlack crow standing on sandy ground in dappled light, a tree trunk and wall behind
Horned goat facing straight ahead with curved horns, other goats blurred behind on rocky ground
Eleven seconds later it finally turns to face forward, staring straight down the lens with pale eyes and a wet black nose. The horns spread in a wide symmetrical crown. Behind it, other goats wander out of focus. It is the full-frontal portrait, the shot everyone waits for, delivered with complete indifference.
White rabbit with dark ears close up on grass, a second black and white rabbit blurred behind it
Close to the ground, the white rabbit nibbles with its head down and its dark-tipped ears pointing two ways at once. A second rabbit, black around the eyes, sits blurred behind it like a reflection that has lost focus. Every blade of grass in front is sharp. Every visitor behind is a smear of colour. Down here, the world is mostly grass and noise.
