Hua Hin, Day 1

The first day in Hua Hin: grey sea from the balcony, bougainvillea, a stone elephant facing the water.

On the first afternoon, at half past two, the balcony rail leads the eye straight out to sea. Tall feathery trees stand in a row along the shore, a little pavilion roof tucked between them with a glass lantern on top. The water is flat and grey-green under a pale sky. Below, the lawn waits, freshly cut, not a footprint on it yet.

From a step away, the elephant fills the foreground, close enough to see the carved folds of its ears and the worn line of its back. A smaller figure seems tucked beneath its trunk. Beyond, the beach curves away to palms and white buildings, and the sea rolls in, grey and steady. The elephant does not turn to look.

A bush of bougainvillea has caught the last of the light, every papery bract a hot magenta against the green. Tiny white flowers sit at the centre of each cluster, small as pinheads. Behind, more blooms blur into a pink haze. After so much grey sea and sky, it lands like someone turning the colour dial all the way up.

Under the trees the grass is already dark, while the gazebos by the water still catch the last pale light. Small groups sit along the edge in twos and threes. One figure crouches on the lawn, maybe tying a shoe, maybe watching the horizon. A red bin stands to one side, the brightest object in sight, like a stray pixel in the dusk.
