Curls of white wrought iron form a bench in the grass, its back a lace of scrolls and leaves. Around it, white urns rise on pedestals, each crowned with spiky plants. Two small swan figures guard the lamp post. Red-leaved shrubs glow behind. The whole garden looks arranged for a portrait, every piece set just so, waiting for someone to come and sit.

From the terrace, the valley spreads out in long green waves, fields and forest stitched together. Distant mountains show faintly blue under heavy clouds. Down below, a curved lawn holds a cluster of white garden figures, tiny from up here. The light is soft and grey-gold. It's the kind of view that makes everyone at the railing go quiet for a minute.

Everything slips out of focus except a few tiny fern-like sprigs and a twisted stalk rising through them. Behind, soft shapes of pink and white glow like bulbs seen through a fogged window. It's hard to say what they are. The frame feels like a channel caught between stations, colour and shape without a clear picture, strangely pleasant to look at.

Pink trumpet flowers hang from a leafy stem, one fully open, others still curled into buds. The petals look soft and slightly crumpled, like paper. Behind them, the valley blurs into green bands. The stem leans out over the slope as if trying to see the view for itself. The colour is warm and sudden against all that green.

Stepping back, the house settles into the full scene: the terraced slope, the rows of plants, the steps leading up. A white deer figure stands on the lawn at the right edge, frozen mid-step. Lights hang from the terrace roof, still unlit. The evening is close now. Soon those bulbs will switch on, and the house will glow like a lantern on the hill.
