Behind a curling iron gate, a black puppy in a striped shirt and a red collar with a bell peers out, ears up, eyes worried. The tiled courtyard behind it is clean and empty. It is not sure whether the stranger outside is a friend or a threat, and so it has decided to stare until it finds out.

From below, the fuselage turns into a dark round mouth against the sky, its rusted end facing the viewer like a tunnel. A metal stairway climbs up the side. Trees frame it in black. It looks less like a plane than a strange observatory, aimed at nothing in particular, waiting for instructions.

The white dog stops in the middle of the lawn and turns its head, tail curled up, posture alert. Trees fill the middle distance, and the hill behind still carries its row of white letters. The grass is soft and green. The dog looks as though it is about to issue a formal greeting.

Seen from inches away, the bougainvillea becomes something else entirely: thin, papery petals in hot pink, glowing against a blur of green leaves. More flowers smear softly in the background. It is a small explosion of colour on an otherwise quiet road, impossible to walk past without stopping.

A sliver of moon hangs in the blue, so thin it almost disappears among the clouds. Below, a power pole pokes up with its wires fanning out. The sky is deep and calm, streaked with white. It is a frame that looks like a test pattern for evening, everything still, waiting for the night show.

Three minutes later, and the moon has the sky almost to itself. A thin crescent, bright now against dusky blue, wisps of cloud drifting past. A wire and the top of a post intrude at the bottom. It is the closing card of the day, the channel switching over to the night programme.
