A tall barn completely covered in green ivy, its wooden doors open, cars and visitors in front
A gravel car park with a metal barrier, low buildings and signs, a craggy limestone hill behind
Nine in the morning, and the car park is mostly empty. A metal barrier stands loose on the gravel, cars wait near the low buildings, and road signs crowd together by the gate. Behind all of it rises a craggy hill with bare limestone faces catching the light. The air looks dry and bright, the kind that will be hot by noon.
Yellow trumpet-shaped flowers scattered through dense green leaves on a climbing vine
Move in and the green turns busy. Yellow flowers hang in loose clusters among glossy leaves, some open wide, some still folded. Bright morning sun picks out every petal and leaves the gaps between the leaves dark. It is the sort of wall that hums with bees, though none are visible here. A minute after the barn, the same green, just closer.
A market table with baskets of red and yellow tomatoes, punnets of berries and a checked cloth
Baskets on a wooden table by a pale wall overflow with tomatoes, big ribbed red ones, cherry ones in yellow and green, a pile of small red peppers. Clear punnets of strawberries and dark berries are stacked to the right. A checked cloth hangs off the edge. Afternoon light lies across it all like a painting of a harvest that is still for sale.
The steep corner of a wooden building with ivy climbing up its weathered planks, blue sky aboveTwo iced drinks in plastic cups with cloud prints on a wooden tray, reflected in a glass table
Two silhouetted people seated by tall black-framed windows looking out onto bright trees
Inside, two figures sit in near total silhouette against tall black-framed windows. One faces away, one turned in profile toward the glass. Outside, trees and a greenhouse frame glow in the late light. A curtain hangs to the right. The room has gone dark around them, like a television showing only the brightest parts of the picture.
